Bio

My name is Daphne and I am an earth scientist. In my undergraduate study, I worked in a lab that studies paleoclimates through a variety of proxies. My primary research involved karst environments, and I looked at trace elements Na, Ba, and Sr within the caves systems. Under the guidance of Dr. Barbara Wortham, I presented at two research conferences and have work in two publications. I plan to eventually further my education and earn my M.S. in Geology.

Education

I attended Benicia High School and took my first Geology course in 11th grade. I was the only student who went with the teacher to the USGS Open House, back when it was still held in Menlo Park. From there, I knew this was my career choice.

I then attended Solano Community College, and studied with Dr. Danielle Widemann, who helped me excel in my Geology courses. With the help of Dr. Widemann, I was able to gain the NSF 2+1 scholarship which helps funds students as they transfer.

I then graduated from the University of California, Davis, with a Bachelor of Science in Geology. I worked in a geochemistry and paleoclimate research laboratory under Distinguished Professor Dr. Isabel Montañez and Dr. Barbara Wortham. From this research, I was able to present at two conferences and gain authorship in two publications.

Heirloom

At Heirloom, I am working as a Geochemical Technician analyzing the properties of various carbonate materials. I collect measurements regarding particle size, hydroxylation extent, carbonation extent, density and elemental composition.

I am in charge of multiple instruments including the Particle Size Analyzer, Thermogravimetric Analyzer, LECO Carbon Analyzer, Gas Pycnometer, NOVATouch gas sorption analzyer, and ICP Optical Emission Spectrometer.

Dept. of Water Resources

At the California State Department of Water Resources, I worked as a Hydrographic Scientist in the Bathymetry and Hydrography unit. We took research vessels along the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to map the underwater features to assess bed erosion and subsidence.

I analyzed the bathymetry data using the Caris and HYPACK programs. These allow for filtration and removal of plant material, submerged object identification, and erosion tracking.

Langan Engineering

I worked for two years at Langan Engineering as a Staff Geologist in the Environmental Section. I sampled soil, soil vapor, and groundwater. I managed project scopes on a naval base, a Superfund site, a landfill, apartment complexes, and a dry cleaner to name a few.

While there, I was a leader and organizer of the Young Professionals, Green/Sustainability and Health & Safety resource groups. I worked all over the Bay Area, Sacramento, and assisted with clients in Florida, Texas, and New York. I taught myself introductory skills in CAD, ArcGIS, and gINT to assist in graphics visualization for these projects.

I specialized in Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments which summarize the pollution history and purchasing risks of a subject property. This geologic and construction management experience motivated me to keep pursuing new realms of environmental study and field safety.
